“What the Samurais did with their swords, we do with our hands.” - Helio Gracie
Since 1925, over 40 members of the Gracie Family have dedicated their lives to developing the most effective system of self-defense the world has ever known.
Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that stresses positioning, technique, and leverage so that a smaller, weaker person can survive and even overcome a larger, stronger aggressor. While Jiu-Jitsu does include some striking, the emphasis is on getting an opponent to the ground in order to utilize ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and choke-holds. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground.
